At the start of the vacation season, Croatia has increased highway tolls by 10 percent. These seasonal toll prices will apply from July 1 until the end of September.
According to Kurier, the new fees for driving on state-operated highways are effective immediately. However, according to the state highway company HAC, buses and trucks are exempt from this price increase.
For example, traveling by car from Zagreb to Rijeka will now cost 10.10 euros instead of the previous 9.20 euros. The fees increase from 16 euros to 17.60 euros on the Zagreb-Zadar route and the Zagreb-Split route from 24 euros to 26.40 euros.
The seasonal toll prices were already introduced in 2017, but have not been applied for the past four years due to the coronavirus crisis to support citizens and the economy.
The HAC explains that this model is part of the financial restructuring in the road sector. In Croatia, a popular tourist destination, around 40 percent of the total annual traffic volume is handled in the summer months.
On some highways, the number of vehicles triples in the summer compared to the rest of the year.
The higher toll charges mainly affect motorcycles, cars, cars with trailers, and motorhomes. This measure is intended to cover the increased costs for maintenance, safety, monitoring, and traffic management during the summer months.
The increased traffic load during the vacation season leads to higher costs in these areas.
